CENTRAL WEST END. Tables draped in crisp white linen fill this high-ceilinged bistro, which looks as if it's been transported from the streets of Paris directly to the Central West End. Large portions of French classics employ cream and butter unsparingly – dieters beware. Lump crab with avocado, tomato, and basil salad is a filling starter; try to save room for plats principaux, including roast free-range chicken with truffle sauce, braised sauerkraut with smoked pork chop and sausage, and sauteed veal in white wine and mushrooms. Three entrees can be sampled for $35 – a steal.

A taste of Wales is on tap at this British-style pub, the only one in North America owned and operated by a member of the Bardic Order of Wales. Enjoy the Highwayman's Lunch, an adaptation of one of Wales' great pub favorites, and wash it down with a Felinfoel Welsh ale. Other menu items include Cornish meat pie and its counterpart, Welsh vegetarian pie, along with soups and stews.

THE HILL. Spanish through and through, this bright, cheerful tapas eatery uses ingredients and recipes exclusively from the sun-drenched land. Warm reds and browns set the interior aglow, creating a space that invites equal parts of intimate conversation and laughter among good friends. Divided evenly between hot and cold tapas, the menu includes such delights as mini-skewers of pearl onion, rosemary, and cheese, and baked mussels with béchamel sauce. An unusual by-the-glass wine list brings even more Spanish flavor to the table.

SOUTH CITY. In spite of a slightly crowded dining room, hungry patrons flock to this cozy Vietnamese restaurant, more than willing to wait for delicacies like muc xao khom (calamari with pineapple chunks, tomatoes, and onions) and banh xeo (pan-seared rice flour crepe stuffed with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts). Although names on the menu may be unfamiliar, there really is something for every taste: myriad soups; beef, chicken, and rice dishes; seafood; noodle dishes; vegetarian plates; and even lau thap cam – specialty campfire pots.

SOUTH CITY. When you tire of what often passes for Mexican food – pools of refried beans and cheese – head to this adventuresome, authentic Mexican eatery. Ask for a seat on the patio to escape the often-crowded dining room, and then savor dishes like richly textured potato quesadillas, homemade tamales, and escabeche (marinated fish served cold). The restaurant's innovative approach to food draws a varied crowd, from professional thirty-somethings to young couples with grandparents and kids in tow.

LADUE. The rustic, yet sophisticated decor of this comfortable eatery with its warm woodwork and paned glass is a cross between a barn and a countryside manor. The classic Southern European menu features French, Spanish and Italian cuisine, with superbly prepared bouillabaisse, black Angus fillet on a round of grilled polenta, and casserole marinière made with shellfish and vegetables in a fragrant broth.

SOUTH CITY. Enjoy something out-of-the-ordinary at this upbeat Brazilian joint. Warm wood floors and plenty of exposed brickwork make for a pleasant atmosphere, even when things get a bit loud. Appetizers like broiled French bread topped with parmesan, blue cheese, and onion cream (torradinhas leme) or fried yucca root wedges presage equally unusual entrees: seafood stew in spiced coconut cream broth, shredded chicken in four-cheese cream and raisin sauce, and portabella mushrooms stuffed with cashews in a balsamic reduction. Vegetarians are elated by the quality of meat-free options. Save room for something sweet – champagne cookies layered with chocolate and custard await.

CENTRAL WEST END. Upscale, modern, and lit by colorful paper lanterns, this restaurant fuses the cuisines of Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Korea. Black wood accents and clean lines set a muted stage for varied, well-prepared dishes. More than 25 entree choices include tempura shrimp with spicy mango dipping sauce, pan-seared lime chicken, grilled swordfish, and vegetarian pad Thai with tofu and cilantro. Cocktails from the stylish bar are a special treat – the Indochine Martini, made with vanilla vodka, is liquid dessert.
