10. Pitons
|
|
St. Lucia's most remarkable natural attraction rises from the sea off St. Lucia's southwest coast. Gros Piton and Petit Piton were formed 30 million years ago by a volcanic eruption. These twin, cone-shaped hills were once actively volcanic, but are now covered with vegetation. Climbing is allowed on Gros Piton but the services of a guide are mandatory. Guides can be arranged through the Forest and Lands Department (758-450-2078) for a fee. Consider viewing the Pitons from the water – St. Lucia makes a gorgeous backdrop.
