LARGO. As Pinellas County developed, many of its oldest structures were slated for demolition in the name of progress. Thanks to local efforts, many of these buildings were salvaged and collected on a 21-acre site known as Heritage Village. Nowadays, two dozen structures – some dating back to the mid 19th century – provide glimpses into the past. Among them are a train depot, store, church, school, outhouse, and many private residences. Also on the property is the county's Historical Museum, which boasts historical documents, photos, and artifacts.

ST. PETERSBURG. Although its Florida premiere was in 1982, this museum had been in the works for 45 years, thanks to the artistic appetite of A. Reynolds and Eleanor Morse, an Ohio couple who admired and eventually came to know Dali. They compiled a substantial collection of Dali's works and established the museum when their home could no longer contain their holdings. The museum now offers hundreds of drawings, oils, sculptures, watercolors, posters, photos, and graphics. Special exhibits also rotate in regularly.

ST. PETERSBURG. Now managed by the city, this signature attraction first opened in 1935, when it was created by local gardener George Turner, Sr. Planted with thousands of specimens of plants and flowers, the 7 acres of gardens enjoy an extra measure of protection, situated, as they are, 15 feet below street level. Folks today love to browse the plantings, taking in their beauty, that of water features, and resident birds and butterflies. Regularly scheduled activities and events are also hosted at the gardens.
