CLEARWATER. Scion of the venerable Bob Heilman's Beachcomber, this appealing gathering place offers savory bistro fare that's a perfect foil to the extensive wine list. Steaks, chops, and seafood are runaway favorites, and you can't go wrong with the selection of gourmet sandwiches and pizzas either. Especially good for a meal with friends, Bobby's makes it easy to dine well and then shift into an evening of conversation over great wines or international beers. Outdoor dining available. A la carte menu.

DUNEDIN. Incredible vistas of the water and of distant islands recommend this fantastic restaurant, whose cuisine is as seductive as the view. The menu sports such luscious fare as roasted lamb shank with merlot sauce, chargrilled salmon with cucumber-dill dressing, sauteed veal sweetbreads, and roasted half-duckling. Steaks, pastas, and shellfish can also be had and provide a flavorful prelude to Swiss chocolate mousse, bourbon pecan pie, and Dutch apple cheesecake. Great for special occasions and Sunday brunch too.

ST. PETERSBURG. An unfortunate presence in a strip mall does nothing to detract from O's accomplished cuisine, which makes alliances with no single tradition and feels free to craft unique food combinations at will. Exceptionally luscious entrees include lobster ravioli in champagne beurre blanc, tender rack of lamb, filet mignon, seafood crêpes with Pernod béchamel, and spinach fettuccini with smoked chicken and chipotle cream sauce. Desserts are also fabulous, including lavender honey-sweetened crème brûlée. Lunch features sandwiches, wraps, quiche, and hot dishes. Takeout available as well.

CLEARWATER. A three-generation enterprise, this place is family-friendly, from the cattle sculpture out front to the affordable prices. Steaks are quite good, and careful preparation renders them tasty and sizzling, usually with a welcome hint of garlic. Enjoy one with creamed spinach or garlic mashed potatoes, and toss in shrimp for added pleasure. Along with prime rib, filet mignon, and the like, you'll discover lobster tail, broiled salmon, pork chops, ribs, and rotisserie chicken. Hot apple pie makes an ideal finish to such an all-American meal.

ST. PETERSBURG. When the carnivore in you begs for appeasement, Spoto's helps tame the red-meat beast with aplomb. Aged, Black Angus beef ensures that good things begin at the get-go, and attentive preparation carries through the impulse. The sirloin and Delmonico cuts are particularly favored, and Filet Oscar Neapolitan couples two filets with crab and asparagus. Chicago-style ribs come in full and half-racks, and you'll also find pork, veal, duck, and macadamia-crusted swordfish to satisfy your cravings. A 30-year-old legacy.
