GREATER CHARLOTTE AMALIE. This magnificent example of 19th-century architecture, also known as the Lavalette House, was built in 1829 by one of St. Thomas's most successful merchants. Bright coral walls are accented with skillfully worked wrought iron. The interior is paneled with dark wood, and the current dining room features 200-year-old Moroccan floor tiles. Non-guests are welcome in the public areas. The hotel is one of the stops on the Blackbeard Castle historic walking tour which includes Villa Notman, Haagensen House and 99 Steps. Guests at Hotel 1829 get free admission to the tour.
