9. Tavern on the Waterfront

GREATER CHARLOTTE AMALIE.   Tavern on the Waterfront's gorgeous harbor view and tasteful décor have made the restaurant quite popular, even among visiting celebrities. Indeed, it's widely considered one of the best on the island, and the wide-ranging menu is sure to tempt. For lunch, try a Thai peanut chicken wrap or the signature slow-roasted baby back ribs in mango-chipotle barbeque sauce. Dinner is a bit more elegant, but no less international in scope – start with conch chowder, spicy shrimp flambéed with Cruzan rum, or traditional pierogis. Almond-crusted grouper, smoked salmon, rare ahi with wasabi aioli, teriyaki marinated pork tenderloin, or the Tavern's classic pork weiner schnitzel are all excellent main courses. I live down here and the restaurant isn't what it used to be. They can't keep their chefs or staff, the staff smokes and drinks at the entrance, the food is no longer consistent (can be great, can be awful and no way to tell which it will be). Cost is far more than the food or service is worth, and the 18% gratuity is included on all checks. Trust me, go somewhere else, there is so much to choose from down here!
