Overview
Many people's first view of St. Thomas is from the water. And this is how Christopher Columbus saw the area in 1493 during his second voyage when he "discovered" Las Islas Virgenes – the Virgin Islands. The islands' capital is Charlotte Amalie, named in 1692 for the Queen of Denmark. Though seven flags have flown over the island in its history, the Danish influence is the one that is still most keenly felt. Visitors walk along gades – Danish for "street" – and Danish Colonial architecture is still the prevalent style in Charlotte Amalie. A well-established port of call, Charlotte Amalie is teeming with shops, attractions and restaurants catering to tourists.
