Kellie Castle was built around 1606 and was once home to the Earls of Kellie, the peerage granted to Thomas Erskine, the well-respected theologian. Restored by the Lorimer family in 1878, Sir Robert Lorimer's grand taste and love of beauty created a wonderful noble pile with gardens that draw crowds looking to enjoy their old world tranquility. But spare a thought for the 5th Earl of Kellie, who hid in the garden for an entire summer in a burnt-out tree stump after the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
