During term time, the students – many of whom are from overseas – bring a youthful buzz to the scene: they maintain St Andrews’ strong traditions, love of balls and dressing up. Whilst there are occasional incidents of high spirits, it is extremely likely that this will be highly amusing rather than unpleasant. St Andrews is a safe place to go out at night and you will be able to enjoy the walk back to your lodgings without any fear of crime.
During golf tournaments the town heaves with the Pringle-clad players, but while it can take longer to get your round in, the atmosphere is affable and friendly.
There are no nightclubs in St Andrews: if you want to go clubbing you must travel to Dundee, 22.5km (14 miles/25 mins) away. However, the pub scene is lively and varied, with a good mix of traditional boozers, trendy bars and stylish gastro-pubs (like the West Port Bar).
