About St Andrews Restaurants
St Andrews has always had a few good places to eat but the recent increase in first-class restaurants has much to do with the beginnings of a semi-slow-food movement in Scotland. The local produce, particularly the seafood from in the East Neuk fishing villages, and the supreme quality meat and game, has given Fife and St Andrews a renewed confidence in what it has to offer. This in turn has put it on the culinary map and introduced a pressure to keep standards high. The fisherman of Crail, just 18km (11 miles or 20 minutes) down the coast, catch some of the finest crabs and lobsters landed in Scotland.
Most of St Andrews restaurants dont bother with dress codes, with the exception of hotels like the Old Course, where a jacket is required. As of April 2006, St Andrews bars, pubs, cafés, hotels and restaurants have been strictly non-smoking.
