5. New Balaka

The opening of Balaka in St Andrews 25 years ago certainly whet the Presbyterian appetite for traditional Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine. There are now a number of other Indian restaurants in St Andrews but Balaka has a place in the locals' hearts. In addition, golfers from across the world return year in, year out, to dine on saag chingri (spinach with prawns) and classic bhunas, kormas and biryanis. The garden outside provides the herbs for many of the dishes. Typical flock-walled décor and not exactly traditional sub-continent music, too.   (© 10Best)
