Delaware

One of the original thirteen colonies, Delaware was the first to ratify the United States Constitution, and to this day, its slogan remains, "it's good being first." As the second smallest state, right behind Rhode Island, its size does not allow much geographic variation. The majority of the state is flat, rising up slightly from the Atlantic Coast into plains and green forests with swampland along the southern border. The most northern edge of the state, the Piedmont, is a little higher and is marked by rolling hills. For bird-watching, Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is one of Delaware's most popular tourist destinations. The tidal salt marsh is the perfect resting place for thousands of migrating birds during spring and fall migrations. The city of Wilmington also offers loads of entertainment. The recently added Riverfront is a collection of shops, restaurants, museums, and of course the Frawley Stadium that hosts hundreds of events each year. Visit the city of New Castle for a glimpse into Delaware's past. The quaint cobblestone streets are original and many of the colonial homes are open for tours. But Delaware is perhaps most famous for the lack of sales tax. As a result, people from all over come to take advantage of the tax-free shopping.
