About Rhode Island
Rhode Island affirms that good things do indeed come in small packages! Although it's the smallest of the United States, Rhode Island is rich in history, scenic vistas, outdoor opportunities and gastronomic adventures. Founded by Roger Williams after fleeing persecution in Massachusetts, the colony supported freedom of worship and political independence from its very beginning. Rhode Islanders were among those who demanded that the Bill of Rights be added to the US Constitution, and then they were the last of the 13 colonies to ratify it. Rhode Island's large concentration of historic landmarks includes the "summer cottages" (mansions) in Newport that were seasonal homes to some of New York's wealthiest families. The "Ocean State" earns its name with all parts of the state being within a half-hour's drive of the coastline. This provides ample opportunity for all manner of boating, fishing and waterside dining. Feast your eyes on the dramatic shoreline punctuated by historic lighthouses, then continue your feast with fresh-from-the-ocean lobster, clams, scallops and fish. You will definitely want to return for second helpings!Local Color
