About Washington
The Evergreen State is an apt name for the lake and forest-dominated state of Washington, with its population of close to six million. Located in the Pacific Northwest, the state is home to hundreds of rivers and lakes and vast ranges of piney woods. Much of the state's population is situated along the Pacific coastline, largely in Seattle, a regional hub of commerce and culture. Business interests include aerospace and manufacturing, agriculture and timber, and fishing. Popular destinations include Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens, North Cascades National Park, the impressive Grand Coulee Dam, and the Columbia River – cruises of varying lengths offer an adventurous way to see the river. One of the most visited regions of the state is the Puget Sound, which is home to numerous islands and bays. The Sound is bordered by majestic Mt. Rainier and the city of Seattle. Outdoor adventurers will find that Washington offers plenty of opportunities for hiking and camping as well as rafting and mountain climbing. Other popular destinations across the state include riverside Spokane, picturesque Moses Lake, and eastern border-town Walla Walla.Local Color
