Steamboat Springs Guide  » More About Steamboat Springs: Overview

Overview

Located in the northwest quadrant of Colorado, Steamboat Springs is virtually surrounded by national forests and is well known for its abundance of outdoor recreation. Although visitors enjoy camping, hiking, bicycling, rock climbing and a host of other fun pastimes during the warmer months, the town is primarily a winter destination. Skiing, of course, is the most prevalent activity, but every single winter sport is enjoyed here, from ice skating and snowboarding to ski jumping and snowshoeing. Steamboat Ski Resort is where the bulk of the activity takes place, but Howelsen Hill offers similar activities on a much smaller scale, and numerous local businesses offer a wide range of additional wintry pursuits in more remote areas. After all, winter sports are not only the town's bread and butter, they are its passion – most of the locals are not only extremely friendly, they're talented and knowledgeable winter sportspeople as well.
