Overview
Founded as a horse stud farm (Stutengarten) along the Nekar River, Stuttgart has evolved into a dynamic small city with a strong economic and cultural foundation. The city is known for industry and manufacturing and is home to several major corporations, most notably Daimler-Benz and Porsche. Visitors should take time to visit both the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche museums, both of which showcase an astounding collection of vintage cars. The historic district of Schlossplatz, which contains the Royal Square, is a popular draw, as is the shopping district of Konigstrasse. Other attractions include the unique Wilhelma Gardens, which is both a zoological and botanical garden; Television Tower, which offers a terrific view of the city; and the Staatsgalerie museum, which contains an impressive and varied collection. The city also puts on numerous special events, including the Bach Academy's International Music Festival.
