Enjoy a typically Australian breakfast sitting at comfy banquette tables, reading the newspaper. The bright, spacious and smoke-free interior works for all hours. Try breakfast dishes like ricotta hotcakes with fresh banana and honeycomb butter, or sweet corn fritters with roast tomato, spinach and bacon. Expect a line most mornings, especially...

Bird, Cow, Fish has three different areas of expertise – a bistro, an espresso bar and a retail 'fromagerie' with a fantastic selection of cheeses. Run by a husband and wife team, with service that's friendly and unpretentious, they specialize in innovative and often simple dishes such as potato gnocchi with burnt butter, verjuice and capers. The...

This casual cafe offers the best bagels in town, but if you're looking for something other than great bread, try lentil soup or risotto. Locals frequent the place for a quick breakfast or lunch, and outdoor seating is available. Reservations accepted for dinner. TRAIN: to Central, BUS: 301-303 along Bourke Street.

This comfy café offers everything from a hot cup of coffee to a full breakfast of eggs benedict, pancakes, and corn cakes. The simple décor features black and white furniture, and as the name implies, polished concrete abounds. Located eight minutes from Darling Harbour in an up-and-coming part of town. BUS: from George Street down Harris Street.

As the name of this French café might suggest, the signature dish is the "petit creme" – a latte served in a bowl. If you're looking for something more filling, try the ham and cheese sandwich with fruit or the house's chocolate croissant. The small interior can get noisy, so ask for an outdoor table in the courtyard if you want peace and quiet....

On the edge of the Royal Botanic Gardens and suspended above Woolloomooloo Bay, the Boy Charlton Pool is a magnificent sight. The café terrace is a great place to wile away a few hours discovering the all-day breakfast menu, or refuel between visiting Mrs Macquarie's Chair and the Art Gallery. See those Sydneysiders power-swim through their lunch...

Stop by Spring on your way home the morning after a night of dancing and bar hopping. This cafe is popular with a young, hip crowd and was rated by "Wallpaper" magazine as the best breakfast locale in Sydney. The food is delicious, although given the small interior, you're not always guaranteed a table! TRAIN: Kings Cross.

The Barn Café is a food-lovers dream, incorporating a café, espresso bar, deli and grocery - all your eating needs fulfilled. Manager Brendan Millett describes the café as somewhere people come to 'eat' as opposed to 'dine'. Large wooden communal tables in the al fresco dining courtyard are surrounded by aromatic plants and herbs, breakfast is...

Guess what covers the walls of this breakfast spot? That's right – old album covers – "vinyls" as they call them. Part of the name may be misleading, though, since you won't find a lounge here. Breakfast items have a mix of Australian and French flavors: baked eggs with tomato and basil or cereal with dried fruit are just two of the many options,...

A fantastic place for breakfast on a sunny morning, (try the French toast with bananas, strawberries and maple syrup), Watson's Bay Tea Gardens Café has glorious views across the harbour, and is just across from the fenced beach swimming pool. Possibly the best place in Sydney for those with toddlers, the café is enclosed with a child-proof picket...
