THE ROCKS.
An important district both historically and currently, The Rocks remains more or less as it existed in the 1800s, even though it's been part of significant changes in the city. In 1900, the NSW government bought The Rocks in order to redevelop the area, and in the 1970s, the Rocks saw the beginnings of Australia's environmental movement, when unions placed bans on work in The Rocks. The area is now home to The Rocks Visitors Centre (the main tourist office in Sydney) as well as a wealth of shops and restaurants. Every weekend, visitors find a huge open-air market and a plethora of live street entertainments. BUS, TRAIN, or FERRY: to Circular Quay.
