DOWNTOWN. Angotti's is one of those restaurants that the locals love to keep secret from visitors, because the lines are already out the door. You can make a reservation if you have over seven in your party, otherwise arrive early or prepare to wait! Murals of Italian cities decorate the walls of the dining room where vinyl covers protect the tables and stacks of paper napkins wait to mop up errant gobs of tomato sauce. Every basic Italian favorite is on the menu, along with a few more sophisticated choices. If lasagna, linguine and clams, eggplant Parmigiana or baked ziti seems too mundane, try the calamari over capellini, stuffed rigatoni with spinach and cheese or the tender veal cacciatore served over angel hair pasta. Kids can order a half portion of most items on the menu. Casual to smart-casual attire. Reservations accepted for groups of seven or more.

NORTH SALINA. Veal and seafood are the specialties at this festive Italian spot, located in the up-and-coming North Salina area of Syracuse. Clams and mussels are available with a variety of sauces and preparations for appetizers. The house signature entrée is "scamppollo." A boneless chicken breast is stuffed with jumbo shrimp, smothered in secret recipe sauce and baked. The owner's favorite dish is Veal Nicholas. Veal scallops are battered and sautéed with shrimp, artichoke hearts and mushrooms in a marinara sauce. There are several pasta and vegetable dishes to satisfy vegetarians, and charbroiled steaks are available for the "meat and potatoes" crowd. Smart-casual attire. Reservations accepted.

DOWNTOWN. This cozy bistro is located in bustling Armory Square. Its fifteen tables are dressed with crisp white linen, which contrasts with the rough red brick of the walls and the unadorned wooden floors. Rather than your usual lasagna and baked ziti, Dante's offers creative Italian dishes such as calamari with mango and rum and flourless lasagna with Yukon gold potatoes, smoked Gouda, artichoke hearts and roasted tomatoes. The wine list has bottles in all price ranges. Homemade desserts include the excellent "fallen angel"--a flourless chocolate torte, and lemon tart with pine nut crust. Smart-casual to stylish attire. Reservations suggested.
