EMERALD BAY. On the lake's southwest coast some 17 miles south of Tahoe City, this state park offers 1,237 acres of forested mountain terrain. The pristine parcel invites hiking, fishing, and fair-weather camping, but it also boasts Rubicon Point, which features a sandy beach and allows glimpses 100 feet down into the clear lake waters. Another much-viewed attraction is Balancing Rock, a mass of granite that sits precariously on the rock below it, waiting for further erosion to undermine its equilibrium.
