EMERALD BAY. On the lake's south shore lies this park, a lovely tract that capitalizes on Tahoe's glacier-carved terrain. Emerald Bay boasts striking, rugged beauty and is a relatively narrow inlet, at 3 miles long by 1 mile wide. Its waters shelter a number of submerged vessels from the 19th century, and the park is the home of Vikingsholm, an estate constructed in 1929 in Scandinavian style that's available for touring. Emerald Bay is notable, too, for enclosing Lake Tahoe's only island, which is crowned with a crumbling stone tea house and is closed to everyone but birds from late winter to mid-summer.
