The celebrations, competitions and events held in Tampa each year truly capture what makes Tampa unique. Over 700 costumed pirates sail into downtown Tampa on a replicated pirate ship and smaller defending ships each January and kick off the Gasparilla Pirate Fest, inspired by the legend of a 19th-century pirate who frequented the nearby seas. Held in May, September and November, the Ybor City Arts Fiesta lures folks into the historic district to see the huge spread of arts and crafts for sale, and Old Hyde Village Art Festival intrigues shoppers with a wide variety of fine art displayed along the sidewalks. And in early March, the Florida Strawberry Festival – a celebration that started in 1930 – generates excitement with country music concerts, rides and numerous scrumptious treats made with the region's bounty of fresh strawberries.
