More about Telluride
Few places enjoy a setting as beautiful as does Telluride, a tiny mountain village set on the banks of the San Miguel River and surrounded by the San Juan Mountains' granite and red sandstone peaks. Until the early 20th century, mining was the town's chief vocation, and Telluride flourished in its heyday, as Victorian homes and such beautiful buildings as the Courthouse and New Sheridan Hotel testify. Once the mines began to close, Telluride nearly became a ghost town. In the 1960s, however, entrepreneurs descended upon the sleepy hamlet, keen to turn it into a wintertime resort. The match was perfect: Telluride's long winters, steep slopes, and powdery snow made for great skiing. Still, it wasn't until the 1980s that the town really began to thrive, sparked by the opening of a regional airport. Completion of the European-style Mountain Village ski area in the 1990s also brought the area into the big-time, allowing it to compete with Vail and Aspen. Today, Telluride is a year-round resort offering everything from world-class golf and trail systems to internationally-acclaimed festivals and world-class downhill runs. In addition, Mountain Village and downtown Telluride offer an impressive array of hotels, stores, restaurants, and bars – something to suit every taste. However, folks visiting Telluride for the first time concur that the town's most important resource is its friendly people, who go to great lengths to ensure that your visit is one you'll not soon forget.
