  1. Three strikes you're out! Toledo is home to the Mud Hens baseball team, a AAA affiliate team for the Detroit Tigers. The Mud Hens' current stadium, Fifth Third Field, opened in 2002.
  2. If you're a M*A*S*H fan, then you probably know more about Toledo than you realize. Native son Jamie Farr (cross-dressing Corporal Klinger) mentioned his beloved hometown throughout the TV show's 11-year run. He pined for Tony Packo's Hungarian hot dogs, and when he took over the company clerk position vacated by Radar (played by Gary Berghoff), he dumped the dresses for Toledo Mud Hens jerseys and ball caps.
  3. The first public golf course west of New York City is located right here in Toledo – the Ottawa Park course established in 1899 and continues to be popular today.
  4. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck... The world class Toledo Zoo began in 1900 when the parks department received an unexpected gift: a woodchuck, which was subsequently displayed at Walbridge Park as the zoo's first exhibit.
  5. Snowboard queen Gretchen Bleiler was born in Toledo April 10, 1981.
  6. Jackie Robinson is usually cited as the first African American professional baseball player, but in truth the first was Moses Fleetwood Walker, who played for the Toledo Bluestockings in 1884.
  7. Holy Toledo! There are several theories about the origins of this phrase. Along with the more obvious possibilities (the city has many churches of different faiths, and its namesake is notable for similar reasons), the saying could have become popular after Billy Sunday called the city "Holy Toledo" during a revival service in 1908. Or, it may have arisen as a satirical comment on the city's abundance of saloons, which at one time outnumbered the churches. It's also been suggested that 1920s-era gangsters referred to the city as "Holy Toledo" because of a lax police department. The bottom line: no one knows for sure!
  8. Toledo native Jimmy Jackson was a local blacktop legend who played for Ohio State University and Toledo Macomber before being drafted by the NBA in 1992. From then on, he played with several teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers and LA Lakers, before retiring in 2006.
  9. The Historic Old West End section of Toledo has one of the biggest concentrations of Victorian-era homes in the country.
  10. Toledo, with the Maumee River flowing through its downtown right into Lake Erie, is among the largest port cities on the Great Lakes.
