EDITOR REVIEW: CHAMPAIGN. The Historic Virginia Theatre first raised its curtain on 28 December 1921 and has served as a community icon ever since. Early on, vaudeville acts and silent films entertained packed houses. Years later, the theatre served as a commercial venue for first-run movies, and in 1977, it hosted a performance of the controversial nude musical "Oh! Calcutta." Recently, there's been renewed interest in the fortunes of the Virginia, and it continues to slate myriad events, from movie screenings and theater productions to orchestra performances and stand-up comedy acts.
