NEW HARTFORD. Zesty food takes the forefront at this Lebanese restaurant, which pulls in lots of student traffic, given its proximity to Utica College. It's not difficult to find vegetarian fare here, thanks to an abundance of grains and vegetables, but lamb chops and filet mignon are skillfully prepared too. Stuffed grape leaves are particularly delicious, and a variety of charbroiled kabobs feature lamb, sirloin, and chicken. Friday's special is generally fresh haddock, and a lunchtime buffet provides good value for hungry folks.

UTICA. Although this wonderful bistro serves delicious main-course fare, it's best-known for its incredible pastries, made fresh daily on the premises. The place is run by two brothers who were trained at the Culinary Institute of America, and their skills show abundantly. Among the temptations are cheesecake, biscotti, tiramisu, cannolis, cookies, and cakes. "Lobster tails," which are pastries filled with Bavarian cream, are a signature. An espresso bar ensures that you have something robust to temper the rich sweets.
