DOWNTOWN. The lovely restoration of this historic hotel also imbued the dining room with a quiet, refined grace. The Continental menu offers added gentility, thanks to braised veal cheeks, wild boar shank, basil shrimp-stuffed lobster, and filet mignon accented with bleu cheese. Salads and appetizers are well-conceived too, and the restaurant's signature butternut squash chowder is a must-try. A nice wine list is available, and service is careful and unobtrusive. Desserts, from area bakeries, are also a delight.

UTICA. Babe's could never be accused of skimping on dining options. The menu boasts all sorts of good things, most of them just the sort of tempting, flavor-packed dishes you can't get enough of. How about a Philly cheesesteak, a bleu cheese burger, or a chicken parmigiana sandwich to get the appetite going? Other possibilities include a New York strip, barbecued ribs, shrimp alfredo, and combination platters of chicken, shrimp, steak, pastas, and the like. A full bar is available, along with a children's menu.

NEW HARTFORD. Offering something of a '50s flair, this family restaurant pulls in all sorts of folks daily. Many take advantage of Zebb's appetizers, which include nachos, chicken wings, and hand-cut fries. Others love the burgers, made on the premises and customized with a trip to the toppings bar. The savory menu also features ribs, barbecued chicken, fried shrimp, and prime rib, not to mention fajitas, enchiladas, and burritos. An in-house bakery turns out fresh desserts, and fountain drinks are a nostalgic delight too.
