NEW HARTFORD. Rustic food that takes its inspiration from the nearby Adirondacks sets the pace at this hotel restaurant. Crawfish and corn cakes whet the appetite, as do venison sausage-stuffed mushrooms. They lead perfectly into roasted lamb chops with maple cream sauce, pan-fried trout, and hunter-style beef medallions. You'll also find veal and chicken dishes, along with filling sandwiches, wraps, burgers, and salads. Wine and beer are available, and children are easily accommodated.

WASHINGTON MILLS. Family-owned, Piggy Pat's brings the great taste of Southern barbecue to central New York. Pulled pork – which started the whole business – is slow-smoked for hours and served with a vinegar-based sauce for authenticity. However, it's not all you'll find: the place also offers barbecued chicken and ribs, Texas beef brisket, sausages, and smoked turkey. Dinners and sandwiches are both available, as is a kids' menu. Just don't forget to try the sides (mac 'n cheese, collard greens, and cornbread among them) and the homemade desserts (Mississippi mud cake and ice cream).
