DOWNTOWN. Begun by a German immigrant in the late 19th-century, this esteemed brewery remains family-owned more than a century later. Its Saranac beers and soft drinks are produced with clean mountain water from the Adirondacks and are especially well-regarded. Popular tours lead through the impressive building, where guides explain the brewing process, company history, and Matt products. After the tour is completed, folks gather in the 1888 Tavern for a sampling of what the company does best. Informative and appropriate for all ages (kids get to try the sodas).

HERKIMER. Although its "diamonds" are actually quartz crystals, this mine offers great opportunity for fun and prospecting for kids of all ages. Visitors are given a hammer and goggles and invited to dig about the site for crystal "treasures," which appear frequently in the mineral-rich area. Folks get to keep what they find, and the mine also offers a gift shop and a museum that delves into the earth's geology and New York's rock heritage. In the vicinity are also a campground and opportunity for fishing, tubing, and canoeing.

UTICA. When winter rolls around and folks want locally accessible winter sport, they often head to Val Bialis. Approximately 12 miles of trails accommodate both skiers and snowboarders and are divided equally among beginning, intermediate, and expert routes. Chairlifts are available, and a snack bar can help when the munchies strike. Recently, Val Bialis has worked to acquire snowmaking equipment so that it no longer is at the mercy of local weather fluctuations and temperatures.
