DOWNTOWN. The allure of railroading still runs strong in central New York, thanks to this company. Passengers travel in vintage train cars, both enclosed and open-air ones, depending on how guests want to experience the summer or fall journey from Union Station in Utica to Thendara, a few hours away. The route's pristine scenery showcases the region to great effect, and folks can get a feel for travel in past eras. Several destination options are offered, and refreshments can be obtained along the way in a cafe car. Special "Polar Express" trips run in December.

DOWNTOWN. First opened in 1928, this elaborate structure was built as a Mastbaum theater and shares its name with one of the chain's brothers. The eclectic theater boasts a wealth of ornaments, including cherubs, Indian faces, marble lions, and a star-studded ceiling. By virtue of its terra cotta exterior, its style has been dubbed "Mexican Baroque," although that's somewhat specific for this melange of influences. Following a multi-million dollar renovation, the Stanley now hosts touring musicals, ballet performances, orchestra concerts, and other events.

DOWNTOWN. Constructed in 1959, this auditorium honors the area's war veterans and was one of the first facilities to offer unimpeded interior views, thanks to the absence of support columns. Renovated in the late 1990s, the "Aud," as it's called, now hosts sports events, family programs, big-name concerts, and other features. It also serves as the home venue for Utica College's men's and women's hockey teams. The auditorium sits near the original Erie Canal.

DOWNTOWN. This substantial, stone station, designed by Allen H. Stem and Alfred Fellheimer in Italian Renaissance style, opened in 1914. It is actually the city's third station and was built on land created by re-routing the Mohawk River. The lofty, impressive interior boasts an abundance of marble, beautifully restored following intial efforts in the late 1970s. These days, passenger trains and buses still frequent the station, which also houses county offices.
