We know, we know – you're not fully functional in the morning until you've downed at least two cups of coffee. While you're in Vancouver, some of that coffee should come from Caffe Artigiano. Artful lattes, devilish mochas, and robust espressos are their forte – they've even won international barista awards. Plus, they offer a nice array of panini, salads and sweet treats for those afternoon doldrums.

With a menu of some 30 desserts, Death By Chocolate may well be your favorite stop in Vancouver. Every menu option features chocolate – sometimes it's disguised as a dip for fruit or a filling for crepes, but it's in there. So whether you choose a "Joseph's Amazing Technicolor Dreamcake," a "Between the Sheets," or a "Multitude of Sins," your craving will be satiated, for the time being, anyway. There are several other locations throughout the greater Vancouver area.

No visit to Vancouver would be complete without a trip to the Chocoholic Buffet at the Sutton Place Hotel's Fleuri restaurant. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening in two seatings (6pm-8:30pm and 8:30pm-10pm), the restaurant pulls out all the stops, presenting a dessert extravaganza that will either leave you completely spent or begging for more. The Master Chocolatier and Pastry Chef brings you sorbets, pies, cakes and more. Be sure to watch as they create the house special Brittany crêpes.

Then of course there's offbeat radicchio, avocado, curry and jalapeno to set your taste buds a tingle. Come hungry and be prepared to experiment. If history is important to you, you'll appreciate that Bon Ton has been teasing Vancouver's sweet tooth since 1926. Tempting cakes, pies, cookies and pastries fill the cases, so good luck choosing just one. The Diplomat Cake comes highly recommended, and the macaroons are wonderfully light and tender.

KITSILANO. When writer Ernestine Ulmer said, "Life is uncertain, eat dessert first," she surely would have high-tailed it to Sweet Obession to indulge. Self-educated pastry chef Lorne Tyczenski offers a mouthwatering array of cakes, tarts and flans that will satisy even the most sophisticated of dessert connoisseurs. The 16-seat cafe is next door to its full service partner Trafalgar's Bistro and provides their tasty treats as well. Hint: the selections at Sweet Obsession are slightly lower priced than at the Bistro but are the same.
