JAMES BAY. Barb's seasonal restaurant serves their fish and chips in classic British style – piping hot and presented in a newspaper cone. The fish is lightly breaded halibut or cod, and the fries are hand-cut. From the Inner Harbour, catch the ferry to Fisherman's Wharf and you can't miss Barb's blue-painted floating restaurant. Picnic tables allow you to eat and watch the local fishermen at work.

DOWNTOWN. This unique floating restaurant is a great place to spend an afternoon sipping a martini and watching the activity on the water, either ensconced in the cozy interior or enjoying the view from the heated, covered patio. Although Blackfish is known for having exceptional fish and chips, there's more to their menu than just fried seafood and potatoes. Start out with chili-lime-cilantro prawns or a curry-mango spinach salad. The halibut and chips are decidedly tasty, to be sure, but you can also opt for a burger or a sandwich at lunch, and at dinner there are steaks, pastas and additional seafood preparations on the menu. Freshly baked muffins and other treats hit the spot at breakfast or in the afternoon.

ROCKLAND / FAIRFIELD. A locally owned family business, Fairfield Fish & Chips has been in operation since 1995. Four varieties of fish are served: halibut, haddock, cod and rock fish, all accompanied by a plentiful portion of homemade, hand-cut chips. A few sides are offered to round out your meal, such as prawns, calamari, onion rings, cole slaw and fried zucchini. Really good burgers, too.

SIDNEY. Casual and friendly, as every good fish n' chip shop should be, this Booktown eatery is a favorite with locals and visitors alike. You have a few more options here – salmon or halibut, fried or grilled, with Cajun spices or garlic and herbs. Maybe you'd prefer prawns, oysters or scallops. Get good old fashioned chips, or fantastic sweet potato fries. Or eschew seafood all together and go for a burger or a big salad with lots of healthy ingredients. There are many choices here, but whatever you select is sure to be fresh and satisfying.

FERNWOOD / HILLSIDE. Local residents have repeatedly voted Haultain one of the top places in town for fish n' chips, so you know it has to be good. The batter is notably lighter than many other fish places, so your halibut or cod won't be greasy. Other menu choices include a host of fried seafood and even pierogies. Service is friendly and quick.

SIDNEY. Another Sidney favorite, local residents have repeatedly voted Hyland's number one Victoria area fish n' chips. The fish is always fresh and never greasy or over-battered, and the hand-cut fries are perfectly golden. A real treat, and well worth a stop if you're visiting Booktown!

DOWNTOWN. Open for more than 50 years, the Old Vic is one of Victoria's longest-lived restaurants, and one of its most popular. They serve excellent fish n' chips, which come wrapped up in newspaper just like in Great Britain. Halibut is the fish of choice for most patrons, although there are usually a couple of other options, as well.
