OAK BAY. For afternoon tea, Blethering Place is a local standby, but the tea room serves every meal of the day, starting with an excellent breakfast. All the traditional favorites are here: eggs Benedict, omelettes, French toast, flapjacks. Some of Blethering Place's afternoon tea spread is also on offer – scones, crumpets and muffins, served with house made strawberry jam – a nice option for Continental breakfast fans.

DOWNTOWN. The Blue Fox serves breakfast all day, and you're likely to see lines snaking down the sidewalk as Victorians wait for their fix. Locals can't get enough of the "very fat French toast." Large fluffy omelets cooked to order and huevos rancheros are other good bets. Not in the mood for breakfast fare? Hearty burgers and sandwiches are available, too.

DOWNTOWN. These are no ordinary pancakes, these are Dutch pancakes. At 12 inches across, they're whoppers by any definition. Top them with butter and syrup, or strawberries and whipped cream, or bananas and walnuts, or any number of other goodies, and they become dessert-worthy. There are other good options (most with a unique Dutch twist) to try if you need some protein in the morning, such as bacon and eggs, omelettes, and eggs Benedict. Lunch consists of sandwiches and salads; try the Rembrandt – a slice of ham, a fried egg, Edam cheese and fresh butter-sautéed mushrooms stacked neatly on toast and topped with hollandaise.

DOWNTOWN. A long-lived family business, the Dutch Bakery is one of Victoria's favorite breakfast stops. They offer a great deal – coffee and a Danish to go for $2! At lunch, you can get a big meal (sandwich, soup or salad, coffee or tea, and a dessert pastry) for $8.50. All pastries, chocolates, and treats are freshly made in-house and they are absolutely wonderful. So even if you just need an afternoon pick-me-up, this is an ideal place to refuel!

DOWNTOWN. For years John's has occupied this 1903 building on Pandora, a regular breakfast stop for many Victorians. Posters of celebrities from the 1940s, 50s and 60s cover the paneled walls, so there's plenty to look at while you're waiting for your food. And it is well worth any wait. John's uses only top quality ingredients like real butter (no margarine!), seasonal fruit (no canned fruit cocktail!) and homemade sausages (no fresh-from-the-freezer links). Eggs Benedict fans will be enthralled at the variety here, and non-fans may become converts. Or create your own omelette from a roster of over 30 ingredients. For a little something sweet, sample the flapjacks topped with the house cream cheese syrup. Whatever you choose, you won't go away hungry!
