INNER HARBOUR. Reservations are strongly recommended at Victoria's most elegant restaurant, located in The Empress Hotel. A mahogany ceiling, tapestry-covered walls and candlelight set the mood for a fine-dining experience. The seasonal dinner menu showcases the culinary team's skill with fresh local ingredients, and might include dishes such as long pepper berry rubbed lamb loin with green olive & goat cheese risotto. During the warmer months, try to get a table on the veranda, which offers absolutely lovely views of the Inner Harbour.

OAK BAY. If you like your brunch with a view, check out the Marina Restaurant on Sundays. Floor to ceiling windows make the most of the views of Oak Bay marina. The tempting brunch buffet is loaded with clams, salmon, oysters, prime rib, green and fruit salads and desserts such as Belgian chocolate truffles and puddings.

DOWNTOWN. The Blue Fox serves breakfast all day, and you're likely to see lines snaking down the sidewalk as Victorians wait for their fix. Locals can't get enough of the "very fat French toast." Large fluffy omelets cooked to order and huevos rancheros are other good bets. Not in the mood for breakfast fare? Hearty burgers and sandwiches are available, too.

DOWNTOWN. This bustling restaurant offers some of Victoria's best Northern Italian cuisine. Thanks to a covered terrace and five outdoor fireplaces, it's possible to enjoy your meal al fresco no matter what the weather. The excellent appetizers include such temptations as smoked tuna over fresh arugula with horseradish dressing. For an entrée, try linguine with prawns, mussels, clams, calamari and tomatoes in a white wine and saffron broth. All pastas are made fresh to order and, as you would expect, Il Terrazzo features a wonderful selection of Italian wines. Business-dressy attire. Reservations required.

CHINATOWN. A 4-foot tall Buddha greets you at the bottom of the stairs leading to Don Mee's second story dining room. You won't be sorry that you made the climb – Don Mee's has been pleasing palates since 1923. Lunch is dim sum only (available until 2:30pm), and they offer the most extensive selection in Victoria. Dinner consists of traditional Szechwan and Cantonese dishes such as sweet and sour chicken, ginger fried beef, and steamed lobster in minced garlic sauce. Smart casual dress.

ROCKLAND / FAIRFIELD. The noodles are made fresh on the premises and a glass wall lets you watch the chefs work their magic. This authentic noodle house offers daily lunch specials incorporating different fresh seafood each day. Also delicious are the spicy ginger fried chicken and the imperial prawn with spicy garlic wine sauce. Lunch lines are often out the door at this hidden gem, thanks to the tasty fare and modest prices. Casual.

DOWNTOWN. If late nights aren't your thing, take advantage of Swans' breakfast and visit this unique pub! Housed in a renovated feed house dating from 1913, this restaurant's soaring ceilings and ground-floor greenhouse make for a pleasant dining environment. The owner's extensive art collection is regularly displayed. Here you'll find all of your breakfast favorites, served up hot and fresh, including Grand Marnier French Toast and omelets made to order with free-range eggs.

JAMES BAY. Barb's seasonal restaurant serves their fish and chips in classic British style – piping hot and presented in a newspaper cone. The fish is lightly breaded halibut or cod, and the fries are hand-cut. From the Inner Harbour, catch the ferry to Fisherman's Wharf and you can't miss Barb's blue-painted floating restaurant. Picnic tables allow you to eat and watch the local fishermen at work.

DOWNTOWN. The bustle and energy at Pagliacci's is non-stop. This New York-style Italian restaurant is a favorite among locals. The cuisine is traditional southern Italian, including knock-your-socks-off ravioli and luscious veal parmigiana. You'll also find 20 a la carte pastas available, each made by hand. This is one of the best late night eateries in the city. Try fresh, warm focaccia while you listen to live music Sundays through Wednesdays. A limited menu is available from 3pm-6pm.

JAMES BAY. This historic 1907 teahouse offers one of Victoria's most authentic British dining experiences. Fresh, home-cooked breakfasts of eggs, kippers and muffins are served with your choice of tea or coffee. The hash browns and scones are also not to be missed. Afternoon tea includes scones, jam, tarts and cream. Tea sandwiches and friendly, efficient service complete the picture.
