4TH DISTRICT.
This enormous church was dedicated in gratitude to St. Charles Borromeo, patron saint of plague victims, whom Emperor Karl VI credited with delivering Vienna from its plight. Construction started in the early 18th century, and its unorthodox exterior is a collage of architectural elements showing influences from the ancient Greek and Roman to contemporary 18th century styling. The interior is embellished with altarpieces and carvings by prominent artists of the time.
