ARLINGTON.   This evocative Marine Corps War Memorial, often called the Iwo Jima Memorial, was put up in honor of all the Marines who have given their lives in service since 1775. The statue depicts the dramatic moment when US Marines raised the American flag on the island of Iwo Jima during World War II. It was officially dedicated in 1954 by President Eisenhower on the 179th anniversary of the founding of the US Marine Corps. METRO: Arlington Cemetery/Rosslyn   (© 10Best)
