DUPONT CIRCLE. One of the more seductive nightspots in the Dupont district, Twelve-Twenty-Three is a modern temple to all things beautiful and opulent. The discriminating door policy and inflated prices (yes, those are Roman numerals on the menu) ensure a certain caliber of clientele. On the first level is a soapstone bar flanked by velvet couches and a small dance floor; the second-floor lounge capitalizes on great views of Connecticut Avenue. Seeking a more exclusive brand of cool, high-rollers reserve a table or bed on the chic VIP level, called Spank, where the crowd tends to be model-quality and the staff at the white onyx bar serves up premium mixed drinks. NORTHEAST. Offering facilities comparable to any large dance club and the perks of a luxurious lounge, Fur's appeal is evident. Located in a former warehouse, the club features a 12,000-foot dance floor, flanked with a disco ball and chandeliers overhead. Guests may retreat to the café for sandwiches and coffee, sip cocktails at the martini bar, puff away in the cigar room, or explore the lounges on the periphery of the club. You aren't likely to be off your feet much here – you'll find yourself doing the salsa, tango, merengue and samba before you know it. The house specialty drink is the mojito, a powerful mix of rum, sugar and crushed mint leaves. If you need to take a break from dancing, there are cozy lounges on the third and fourth floors. SOUTHWEST. Situated on the Potomac, this gorgeous venue houses a restaurant and night club. A freestanding bar graces the spacious lobby, and in the dining room, patrons savor views of the river and nibble on seafood specialties. A bountiful Sunday brunch includes a carving station, waffles, omelets and an impressive bar. DUPONT CIRCLE. Formerly known as Badlands, this club caters to a gay crowd. It's a large club with a new wooden dance floor and a generously-sized projection screen. The clientele is typically young and trendy, and the club is open weeknights when most other dance clubs are cooling their heels. The downstairs lounge features comfortable couches, while the upstairs area has a long bar and more upholstered sofas, perfect for relaxing. Trendy dress.
