U STREET. Multicolored tiles and artwork accent this intimate restaurant, where guests enjoy live jazz from grassroots musicians. Although they're really there for the show, diners don't pass up the Ethiopian fare, which includes fried plantains, curry chicken, whole red snapper prepared in a Creole sauce, or a vegetarian platter, along with a beer or glass of house wine.

GEORGETOWN. Although this club may be a little pricey for some, it presents top-name jazz artists in an intimate setting. A roster of past performers includes Dizzy Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis. BRIGHTWOOD PARK. Keeping with truth in advertising, Twins Lounge is actually owned by a pair of Ethiopian twins. Their great night spot allows guests to listen to great jazz while snacking on authentic Ethiopian and American appetizers and entrees. The small bar only holds about 50 people, so come early to get a good seat. Popular with area residents, you'll discover that local musicians are just as likely to be in the audience as on the stage.

FALLS CHURCH. Excellent Thai cuisine and nightly jazz and/or blues performances draw patrons day and night to this delightful restaurant. Aiming to please a variety of audiences, the menu offers everything from spicy curry dishes and the ever popular pad Thai noodles to burgers and fries. While guests chill out with a beer or cocktail in the bar's sleek interior, talented musicians from far and near grace the stage. NB Smoking is permitted in the bar but not in the dining room.

TAKOMA PARK. Takoma Station Tavern hosts a variety of live music acts. The majority of them feature local favorites, but some national names are thrown in occasionally . Every night is busy, but Wed-Fri, you'd better show up early, because jazz happy hour starts at 6:30pm and the place gets packed. ADAMS-MORGAN. Columbia Station sponsors live jazz concerts every night of the week. If you expect to get a good seat, though, you have to show up early. While you wait, look over the unusual artwork on the walls. Around 10pm, the show begins, and the room floods with local jazz music. Terrific performances! Dress is casual to business casual but nothing too fancy. METRO: Woodley Park/Zoo or Dupont Circle

DOWNTOWN. A classy dining room, accented with dark wood, elegant chandeliers, a piano and a fireplace, greets guests at Bohemian caverns. Menu items include the "Miles Davis" (lamb kabobs on saffron rice), the "Charlie Parker" (linguine with crabmeat, shrimp, scallions and Roma tomatoes) and other Mediterranean-inspired dishes. After dinner, descend into the legendary Club Caverns, a below-ground concert venue adorned in geologically themed décor, for the main event. If jazz isn't your thing, then check out Club 2001, the upstairs lounge, where DJs spin a wider variety of tunes.

Bright yellow walls, earthen-toned floor tiles, potted green plants and light wood bistro tables create an upbeat atmosphere at this upscale restaurant, and live jazz on Thursday-Sunday nights enhances the experience. Pancakes, available with blueberries, strawberries, bananas or chocolate chips, and French toast are popular at Sunday brunch.
