NATIONAL MALL. The Smithsonian – for many, the image of the 19th-century sandstone "Castle" immediately springs to mind. The Institution itself is larger than most realize (19 museums and the National Zoo in DC alone) and granting only one day to "do the Smithsonian" is a mistake. Always-popular stops are the National Air & Space Museum and the National Museum of American History (closed until Fall 2008); however, the beautiful National Museum of the American Indian has emerged as a hot attraction, and the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington-Dulles serves as a fascinating repository of nearly 80% of the Smithsonian's air and space collection. METRO: Smithsonian

Tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the Guide Service kiosk on the southwest side of the Capitol. As you might expect, the lines tend to be long, so arrive early. U STREET. Multicolored tiles and artwork accent this intimate restaurant, where guests enjoy live jazz from grassroots musicians. Although they're really there for the show, diners don't pass up the Ethiopian fare, which includes fried plantains, curry chicken, whole red snapper prepared in a Creole sauce, or a vegetarian platter, along with a beer or glass of house wine.

GEORGETOWN. Step back in time as you enter this elegant Federal-style country inn. Indeed, the early American antiques, Limoges china, Currier and Ives prints, and rustic fireplace create a comfortable yet luxe dining space. Skillfully prepared American dishes such as fresh Maryland crab cakes, Chesapeake rockfish, and rack of lamb with creamy feta potatoes keenly remind patrons why 1789 is praised as one of the area's most distinguished restaurants. The superb wine list and strict dress code only add to the legend, as does a cast of regulars that includes members of DC's "old money" crowd and the occasional public servant. METRO: Foggy Bottom

WOODLEY PARK. The National Zoo, part of the Smithsonian Institution, offers glimpses of more than 5000 animals. Home to many rare and endangered species, the zoo shelters residents in natural habitats on 163 acres. Perhaps the most popular attraction is the giant pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, who are on loan from the China Wildlife Conservation Association. Informative displays are scattered throughout the zoo, and special events, lectures, and shows are frequent. METRO: Woodley Park/Zoo

CAPITOL HILL. Bullfeathers gets its name from Teddy Roosevelt's favorite expression and is a polite version of that other "bull" expletive. During the day, you'll find politicians from Capitol Hill flocking to this bar, where they down juicy burgers and watch news programs on the overhead TVs. In the evenings, a younger crowd gathers for hours of rowdy socializing. Pop music plays in the background, happy hour offers good prices on beer, and Mondays feature half-price burgers. DOWNTOWN. This little-known find is one of the top places in town for flavorful Indian cuisine, and its location near the White House means it typically crawls with staffers and political types. Reportedly a favorite of the Clintons during his time in office, the refined, palm-dotted dining room is a combination of British and Indian styles. But the food is authentic Indian all the way, with skillfully prepared tandoori dishes, lamb in saffron with yogurt and spices, and a fantastic array of curries. Vegetarians and carnivores will both be satisfied. Just don't miss the naan, a flavorful, soft bread that's a Bombay Club specialty. Business casual dress. Reservations recommended.
