ARLINGTON. This stylish eatery, located along Columbus Pike, has emerged as one Arlington's hipper gathering spots. Sharp geometry, pendant lights, exposed ducts, a sleek lounge area and Zen-like balance characterize the space, making it a popular spot for the area's cool young professionals. Headliners from the menu include crispy catfish curry; roasted duck with fresh chili peppers, garlic and basil leaves; and shrimp and cellophane noodles served in a clay pot.

DUPONT CIRCLE. For classic Thai eats in a thoughtful, well-composed setting, The Regent is an attractive option. The walls are hung with gallery-quality pieces of Eastern art ( Signature dishes include Neua Krata (beef served over mixed veggies), Gra Prao Ped (stir-fried duck with sweet basil and ginger sauce) and Pla Neung Manao (rockfish with lime-chili sauce), and the menu also lists several familiar noodle dishes and curries.

THE PALISADES. Aficionados of fine Japanese food precisely presented in a delicate, multicourse fashion deem this place superb. Fresh sushi and sashimi display visual and culinary artistry, qualities that extend to the rest of the menu. Impeccably fresh ingredients ensure that noodles, beef, salmon and the chef's daily innovations are deserving of the praise they garner. In fact, the variety of tastes leaves the palate satisfied but not overwhelmed. And for an aperitif, their cold sakes come highly recommended. Dress is business casual, but make sure to wear socks because diners must don slippers at the door.

Peppered with antiques from Thailand and China, the hot spot surrounds guests with teak, bronze and silk, an impressive backdrop to be sure. FOGGY BOTTOM. This restaurant is a romantic favorite in DC, and its Asian artifacts create one of the loveliest dining rooms around. Exquisite carvings, Chinese screens and Japanese helmets are displayed along bold green and gold walls. The gourmet cuisine stretches the boundaries of Asian cooking, with sea bass grilled in a banana leaf, Chinese dumplings in ginger, and smoked trout with Fuji apples. For dessert, the mango and banana spring rolls are a brilliant idea well executed. Perfect service from waiters clad in black satin pajamas. Reservations recommended; business casual dress. BAILEYS CROSSROADS. For Thai cuisine in an understated but pleasant atmosphere, Duangrat's is a top choice. Seafood redolent with the flavors of chili and lime, chicken in an assertive peanut-garlic sauce, and pork sweetened with plum are a few delectable options. Servers in traditional garb, crystal chandeliers and muted watercolors add to the classy ambiance. One recent special, Happy Family Thai Jambalaya, with halibut, shrimp, crawfish, chilies and curry paste over rice, is a perfect example of the kitchen's creative efforts. GLOVER PARK. DC's first sushi bar, Sushi-Ko lost its luster for a while, but now, the shine is back, along with original master chef Tetsuro Takanashi. The award-winning place serves quick lunch favorites and more elaborate dinners. Basics like sushi, shrimp tempura, and teriyaki chicken are always available. The specialty menu, however, changes daily, offering items like salmon tartare and sea trout Napoleon. If you're alone, the brushed-metal sushi bar makes a good dining option. DOWNTOWN. This modern bistro dishes sushi with a twist. Chef Kaz Okochi originally trained as a fine artist and brings that sensibility to his cuisine. While he maintains a repertoire of classic sushi rolls, he also experiments, creating such delicacies as sake-poached scallops with lemon-cilantro dressing or eggplant carpaccio. Diners may order individual rolls from the à la carte menu or choose a sushi assortment. The bento box combines several items, drawing from spicy green mussels, seaweed salad, grilled baby octopus, and a variety of sushi dishes. The sake list is very good too.
