DUPONT CIRCLE. Within one of DC's oldest hotels, this restaurant plies guests with delicious American cuisine. It places a premium on fresh, regional produce and meats and changes the menu depending on what's available. An apple and walnut salad skillfully mixes flavors and textures. Seafood is the house specialty, and sautéed soft-shell crabs over wilted greens are proof of the attention. Rigatoni with bolognese sauce also delights, as do homemade ice creams and white chocolate cheesecake. If you don't mind waiting for a table, the enclosed courtyard is bliss during mild weather. DOWNTOWN. This upscale restaurant attracts a wide mix of politicos and world citizens longing for South Carolina's Lowcountry cooking. Barbecued salmon fillet, shrimp and grits, Frogmore stew (seafood, no frogs) and Southern fried chicken are menu classics that come with cornbread, biscuits and lots of animated conversation. Vegetarians find warm embrace in meatless dishes like sautéed black-eyed pea cakes. Fried catfish, biscuit-battered French toast, country ham with gravy and other brunch delights also gain wide approval. Some say that this type of food is a bit heavy – others simply nod and butter another biscuit. METRO: McPherson Square

ARLINGTON. This popular café has two dining areas, the lively bar area downstairs and the quieter dining room upstairs. The food at each is similar, so rest easy – just choose the location that suits your mood. The menu's updated American fare culls influences from a variety of cultures, so you can munch on steaks, pot stickers, quesadillas, pork chops, or smoked salmon. For seafood aficionados, the specialty is quick-seared tuna crusted with sesame seeds. Finish up with the unbelieveable chocolate hurricane cake. For lighter options or for down time, sidle up to the bar and enjoy a snack and a drink. Call ahead seating is available.

DUPONT CIRCLE. Without exception, everyone raves about this fabulous place and its incredible pies. Pizzas baked in a wood-burning oven come with thin, hearty crusts and authentic ingredients. Without even sampling one, you can judge food quality by the lines outside the door. The small dining room provides more than just pizza, as proven by great sandwiches, stuffed with fresh cold cuts, roasted vegetables, and tangy cheeses on home-baked breads. Salads, wine and gelatos are terrific, too. METRO: Dupont Circle

GEORGETOWN. Rocklands is serious about barbecue, and perhaps that's why many locals agree that they do it best. The place cooks meat over wood or over hardwood charcoal, both of which give it superb flavor. The menu features a mouthwatering collection of barbecued beef, pork, and chicken, including brisket and babyback ribs. Dining with a vegetarian? Never fear – the menu has selections for them as well. Grilled fish available too. Casual dress.

CAPITOL HILL. When you long for good Southern food, whether it be Cajun, Creole, or soul, this grand Union Station restaurant satisfies the cravings. The menu sports dishes like jambalaya, cheese grits, and Virginia trout, but the hottest entree is the "Swamp Thing," an assortment of seafood served over Southern-style greens and accompanied by a mustard-based sauce. Desserts are definitely worth your time, too, and although portions can be large, save room for the sweet potato pecan pie. Classic jazz plays in the background, adding a mellow note to this fine lunch spot. METRO: Union Station

Curries and stews make up a large part of the menu and come with portions of spongy bread used to soak up the tangy sauce. Condiments that accompany the dishes can be either spicy or mild; it's up to you. Plus, there's a good selection of vegetarian dishes for those who don't do meat. Best of all, the African style is to eat with your hands! Prices are very reasonable. Casual dress; street parking. Reservations are recommended. METRO: Woodley Park/Zoo
