10Best's Washington Attractions & Activities

-- Kelly Sigmon, 10Best Travel Editor

Known for its vast array of monuments, memorials, and museums, the nation’s capital provides a virtually limitless supply of leisure activities. The Mall features the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the prestigious presidential monuments, along with many of the world-famous Smithsonian Institution’s museums, including the National Air and Space Museum. The city’s gardens and parks offer perfect getaway spots from the hustle and bustle of politics and city life. Dumbarton Oaks and the National Arboretum feature acres of natural beauty, while expansive Potomac Park and Rock Creek Park grant stretches of green space amid the marble, glass, and steel of Washington’s notable buildings. Tours abound, and most feature the White House, the Supreme Court, and the Capitol Building. In Georgetown, just northwest of downtown, you’ll find plenty of upscale eateries and shops, not to mention the regal Washington National Cathedral. The National Zoo and Aquarium are must-visits as well – plus, they’re free. Theater and the arts are widely promoted in the District by such places as the impressive Kennedy Center and the more intimate Folger Theatre.
