DUPONT CIRCLE. At Mimi's, be fed and entertained at the same time – the performing waitstaff and creative chefs are abundantly talented. The "American" bistro celebrates many cultures that have influenced American cooking, and the menu offers burgers, hummus, and everything in-between. On a regular basis, servers perform animated numbers, and the acts fill the place with energy. A full bar is available, and Mimi's is a great destination when you want some spirited revelry with your cocktails. Casual dress.

DOWNTOWN. Since 1856, this landmark bar and restaurant has served DC's power class. Rich with furnishings, including Teddy Roosevelt's hunt trophies, the place never fails to satisfy. It's a great place to get that perfect martini and enjoy the raw oyster bar, which carries more then seven types of oysters. Four bar areas help accommodate crowds of patrons: one, the Corner Bar is intimate, with private booths, while another one, the Old Bar is more open and conducive to mingling. All are constantly crowded, but don't be intimidated. Order up a drink and give your conversational skills a workout. Late night dining available. METRO: Metro Center

U STREET. Bright yellow walls, earthen-toned floor tiles, potted green plants and light wood bistro tables create an upbeat atmosphere at this upscale restaurant, and live jazz on Thursday-Sunday nights enhances the experience. Menu offerings range from chicken picatta and London broil to hummus and Portobello sandwiches. Pancakes, available with blueberries, strawberries, bananas or chocolate chips, and French toast are popular at Sunday brunch. DJs offer entertainment in the upstairs lounge on Friday and Saturday nights, while Thursdays feature live hip-hop.

NORTHEAST. Four levels of state-of-the-art diversions and urban scenery attract entertainers, pro athletes and DC's sexiest civvies to this converted warehouse. Packed dance floors led by elite DJs, plush sitting areas, and luxurious private lounges combine to keep patrons enthralled well into the night. And while the third-level pool room offers a place to stoke competitive fires, the exclusive Loft on the top floor beguiles with its swanky bar and the Penthouse, a VIP area with wall-to-wall carpet, bar, restroom and shower.

ADAMS-MORGAN. Columbia Station sponsors live jazz concerts every night of the week. If you expect to get a good seat, though, you have to show up early. While you wait, look over the unusual artwork on the walls. Around 10pm, the show begins, and the room floods with local jazz music. Terrific performances! Dress is casual to business casual but nothing too fancy. METRO: Woodley Park/Zoo or Dupont Circle

BRIGHTWOOD PARK. Keeping with truth in advertising, Twins Lounge is actually owned by a pair of Ethiopian twins. Their great night spot allows guests to listen to great jazz while snacking on authentic Ethiopian and American appetizers and entrees. The small bar only holds about 50 people, so come early to get a good seat. Popular with area residents, you'll discover that local musicians are just as likely to be in the audience as on the stage.

DOWNTOWN. Posh IndeBlue wins high marks from scenesters for the bold Franco-Indian fare served in its restaurant. Downstairs is a suave lounge where the well-heeled clientele settle into sexy furniture and enjoy Beluga caviar and foie gras along with their glass of pinot or an expertly-mixed cocktail. Wednesday through Saturday nights, the lounge also hosts some of the capital city's top DJs, who add to the cosmopolitan atmosphere with their hand-picked selections of world beats. NORTHEAST. Offering facilities comparable to any large dance club and the perks of a luxurious lounge, Fur's appeal is evident. Located in a former warehouse, the club features a 12,000-foot dance floor, flanked with a disco ball and chandeliers overhead. Guests may retreat to the café for sandwiches and coffee, sip cocktails at the martini bar, puff away in the cigar room, or explore the lounges on the periphery of the club. Non-smoking area available.
