More about Watkins Glen

The county seat of Schuyler County, Watkins Glen has a population of about 2200. The town is situated at the southern end of Seneca Lake, in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The area is well known for its wineries, and Watkins Glen is on the Finger Lakes Wine Trail; wine is such an important part of the culture, in fact, that the town hosts the Finger Lakes Wine Festival at the Speedway in July. Other community celebrations include the Italian-American Festival in August, and the Racing Thunder in the Glen Festival, also in August. Additionally, there are several auto races, notably the Sahlen's Sports Car Grand Prix in June and the Zippo US Vintage Grand Prix in September. On Franklin Street, you'll find an eclectic assortment of shops, offering everything from NASCAR memorabilia and antiques to fishing tackle and jewelry. Visitors enjoy a number of outdoor pursuits, such as scenic cruises on Seneca Lake, and guided hiking, bicycling, and fishing trips at Watkins Glen State Park, known for its impressive waterfalls. Kayaking and canoeing are popular, and rentals can be procured at one of the marinas. The area is home to several speedways, but the best known is Watkins Glen International, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. NASCAR fans will enjoy visiting the Motor Racing Research Center which houses a large collection of racing posters, books, films, and photos. Watkins Glen International hosts the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series in August, as well as a number of other races throughout the warmer months.
