WHISTLER VILLAGE. Readers of Vancouver magazine voted Araxi "best restaurant in Whistler," and locals agree with that assessment. This is one of the hottest spots in town, popular with a young, well-heeled crowd. Mediterranean in flavor, the menu focuses on fresh regional seafood, game and produce. Locally caught trout is smoked right in Araxi's kitchen and BC ostrich is another favorite with regular diners. The in-house bakery makes all of the bread fresh each day. Take advantage of the sommelier – he can help you choose an appropriate wine from their cellar of 12,000 bottles. For dessert, don't miss the gingerbread torte with maple cream, or sample the homemade biscotti while you sip your coffee. Business-dressy. Reservations suggested.

NORTH WHISTLER. This secluded restaurant is a romantic escape from the bustle of the village, and the view of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains is superb. The cozy dining room has only twelve tables (and some additional lakeside seating in the summer) but that just serves to enhance the atmosphere. Try the pan-seared Camembert for an appetizer, followed by the local pork loin with secret hunter mushroom sauce. There is also a wide selection of BC seafood dishes. Save room for the signature dessert: black tusk chocolate cake. Reservations suggested.

WHISTLER VILLAGE. Forget the usual rough cut beams and antler chandeliers. The Four Seasons' Fifty Two 80 has a fresh approach to "mountain lodge décor" that manages to be simultaneously stylish, cosmopolitan AND rustic. There's stone, leather and wood in abundance, but the accents of vibrant mosaic tiles and a warm color palette brings the natural building materials right into this century. The menu brings Canadian cuisine up-to-date as well, in preparations such as pan-seared salmon with summer peas, chanterelles, bacon and fresh sorrel, or spit-roasted veal chop with mascarpone polenta and grilled asparagus. Fifty Two 80 also has a great bar, the crowning glory of which is a year-round terrace complete with firepit.

That feeling carries over into the menu. Try the port-marinated ostrich carpaccio with capers and shallots for a starter, and make your entrée the bison striploin with herb potato gnocchi. WHISTLER VILLAGE. Chef-owner Rolf Gunther's restaurant is a winner in every aspect. Consistently rated one of Whistler's top restaurants, it exudes that appealing, rustic elegance so prevalent in mountain resort towns. It's the perfect ambience in which to partake of fine Canadian cuisine. Start with some oysters – choose one of eight different preparations – or perhaps a bit of seared Quebec foie gras on brioche toast with an apple raspberry salad, or caribou medallions with porcini mushrooms. Main courses are equally intriguing: marlin with a garlic sesame crust, grilled pheasant and prawns in Thai red curry sauce, grilled Arctic caribou, the Rim Rock Mixed Grill (roasted rack of lamb, beef tenderloin and caribou). A top notch mountain experience.
