WHISTLER VILLAGE. A small Whistler chain, Affinity rents and sells top quality ski and snowboard equipment. Clothing and accessories are available for rent as well, so if you've forgotten your goggles there's no need to purchase another pair. The company also has a free shuttle to the slopes from each of their locations, free tuning and waxing, and free overnight storage of your equipment.

WHISTLER VILLAGE. Boasting one of Whistler's largest supplies of ski equipment, Can-Ski easily services the resort village from four high-profile locations. Popular name brands include Atomic, Head, Salomon and Tyrolia, and the shop offers custom (and guaranteed) boot fittings. As for durable, stylish threads, they feature the latest from Columbia, Descente and North Face. Can-Ski also carries mountain bikes and clothes and gear for warm-weather pursuits.

WHISTLER VILLAGE. Lost Lake Park maintains 32km of cross country ski trails, along with numerous snowshoe trails, making it quite a popular destination during the winter. Cross Country Connection is located right on the trail to the park, and they provide rental equipment, instruction and tours. During the summer months they rent bicycles so folks can enjoy the Lost Lake Park trails virtually year round.

WHISTLER VILLAGE. Located at Whistler Marketplace in the North Village, this shop features a terrific inventory of outdoor clothing and gear for men and women. In addition to hearty outdoor wear, Escape Route enjoys a fine reputation for its mountain equipment, including products from manufacturers like Arc'teryx, Mountain Hardware, G3, Black Diamond, Patagonia and Ropegun. If you're only up for a short-term commitment, Escape Route rents equipment for camping, climbing, snowshoeing, skiing and snowboarding.

WHISTLER VILLAGE. After more than a decade in business, Fanatyk definitely knows its stuff. And in the local press, residents have regularly voted Fanatyk "best bike shop." During the warmer months, they specialize in mountain bike sales, rentals and service. Rent a bike for anywhere from one hour (about CAD12) to one day (about CAD 104). Once the snow starts to fall, they switch gears, focusing on skis and equipment for winter sports. They'll even custom fit ski boots.

WHISTLER VILLAGE. The oldest and biggest snowboard shop in Whistler, Showcase was founded in 1989 and today has actually expanded to include shops in Alberta and Colorado. They can rent everything you need for a day or a week of snowboarding, from the board itself to the helmet. They also offer an array of clothing and accessories, and have a full in-store repair shop.

WHISTLER VILLAGE. Spicy does it all, very well! They rent, repair and sell bikes, skis and snowboards. And they have a wide range of clothing and accessories from goggles and gloves to avalanche transceivers and high-tech backpacks – clothes and gear for adults and kids alike. In operation since 1992, the shop has definitely proven its mettle.

WHISTLER VILLAGE. Summit Sport couldn't have a better location, right next to the renowned Whistler Mountain Bike Park. They have the best selection of rental equipment: downhill bikes, cross country bikes, pads, helmets, armor – you name it, they've got it. But they don't cater exclusively to daredevil-types. More sedate riders and families with small children will find plenty on offer as well, including trailers. In addition, each year they sell the previous season's rental equipment at reduced prices, most of it in excellent condition and well worth the price. They're not lacking when it comes to winter sports, either, opening two additional shops in the winter to handle ski and snowboard rentals.

WHISTLER VILLAGE. Westbeach is a big name in the snowboarding world. They feature a full line of their own gear – snowboards, accessories and clothing – plus a nice selection of other brands, including Burton, Forum, Libtech and Gnu. The staff is knowledgeable and fun, and there's another shop (the original, actually) in Vancouver if that's more convenient. A must-visit for any shredder (or fan)! Gear is also available for the surfer or skateboarder in the group.

WHISTLER VILLAGE. These folks are serious bike enthusiasts. They deal only in bicycles and the necessary gear, stocking the best of the best, from clothing by Sombrio, Oakley, Sugoi and Pearlizumi to helmets from Giro and Bell. They'll rent you a full mountain bike package that includes not only the bike but pads and other safety gear – top of the line equipment, and all the bikes are new each season. They also sell the previous season's rental bikes at drastically reduced prices – if you're in the market for a new bike, this is a great way to save money. Rentals by the hour or day.
