5. Nu Way Café

My dad worked at the original NuWays, back in the late 30's, early 40's. He worked outside, up on the roof, directing the carhops, etc. 0ur family grew up eating NuWays whenever we could, especially for special occasions. My husband and I drive from Hutchinson now to eat Nuways whenever possible. When my Dad comes from Topeka to visit us in Hutchinson, we try to plan a trip to Wichita and eat a large NuWay sandwich, chili w/o beans, onion rings and a large rootbeer. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it!! There's been a few changes through the years, but the sandwich is still the same as always.

I lived 2 blocks from the original Nu Way and had a paper route that included that area. I left Wichita when I was 17 to enter the armed forces and never lived there again, but whenever i visit Nu Way is a must. I have a mug that I regularly use that brings back many fond memories.
