6. Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation

We went on a two-hour progressive tour of the the plantation houses at Piney Grove actually given by one of the owners. It was a fascinating story about the history of the buildings and the entire James River Plantation country. It was the best historic house tour we have ever been on.

We visited Piney Grove as it was part of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail that we were following. We did the self-guided tour which includes several wonderful outdoor exhibits, a wonderful nature trail and a map directing us around the beautiful grounds to the four major historic structures and many plantation outbuildings. We really enjoyed the museum exhibits on Native Americans in the area. We look forward to returning to one of the special evening progressive tours they offer, or to stay overnight, as they offer B&B lodging in one of the historic buildings. This is a really interesting site that should not be missed by those interested in history and archirecture.
