COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG. The sturdy brick structure with its fine geometrical symmetry was the center of the town's activities in Colonial times. A crowd gathered around its wide stone steps to hear the first thrilling read of the Declaration of Independence as well as the Paris Treaty which marked the end of the Revolution. Inside, policies were debated and made, justice served and it was even briefly a respite for wounded soldiers of the Civil War. Today, you can marvel at the unsupported portico, take part in a mock trial, or even place your head and hands in the stocks outside.
