With cakes made from scratch and herbs and vegetables pulled from the garden, the Carrot Tree has the reputation for being one of the freshest places in town! The carrot cake and coconut cake are both popular, as are the coffeecakes and pastries. There is a small dining area and outside terrace. They also serve soups, ham biscuits and salads. But save room for the desserts!

Since 1975, the Fireside has been serving excellent beef to locals in a setting that is a throwback to the real steakhouses of the past. The restaurant, decorated in dark colors, has well-dressed waiters who open heavy, bound menus for customers who are seated at linen-covered tables. This place does not appear to have changed much at all. However, the menu has changed so that now, along with the superb beef, you'll find Greek options and more seafood opportunities. But go for the beef.

Serving both Northern and Southern Italian cuisine, this restaurant has been a favorite of locals for several years. Located in the Village at Kingsmill, this small place fills up fast with diners who savor the pizzas, pastas and veal dishes. The pizza ovens can be seen from the dining room, and the aromas waft across the tables. The cannolis are made on the premises and are a wonderful end to a meal here. This Italian restaurant has pizzazz beyond its prices.

COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG. This place has the right name – you can smell the aroma all the way down Prince George Street. The Aroma "therapy" menu runs the gamut from Stimulating to Tranquil to Contemplative – and those are just the beverages! There are bagels and croissants for breakfast; sandwiches, salads and soups for lunch and dinner; and of course, pastries and pies anytime. You can also make your own s'mores here – they give you the stuff and the flame! A funky, fun place with a diverse clientele.

This 18th-century house has marvelous food and antiques. Evenly split between dining and shopping, this is a well-known landmark for both in Williamsburg. With English and American antiques and gifts, ham, gravy and biscuits and Brunswick stew, you will not leave empty-handed or hungry. The clientele is also split between locals and visitors, but don't let the crowds deter you – the service is as good as the food.

COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG. If you need a break from Colonial attractions or shopping, the Cheese Shop in Merchants Square is the perfect place. Their sandwiches make great meals, and along with the fresh salads and daily quiches, they form an extensive menu. The desserts are outstanding, but if you have a sandwich, you may have to get the dessert to go – the sandwiches are super-sized. Alcoholic beverages are available, and there is outdoor seating in nice weather.

To say this is a local favorite is an understatement. Right off Hwy 64, you can usually follow your nose or just look for the trucks parked along the highway to find it. The pulled-pork barbecue is cooked out back, and lines form early for take-out. There are a few tables inside, but take it somewhere else – that is what the regulars do. The onion rings are a great accompaniment. This is award-winning, absolutely succulent barbecue, and people come from all over the state for it!

Even if you turn up your nose at all-you-can-eat-buffets, this one may change your mind for one night. There is an absolute feast of wonderful items – scallops, steamed crab legs, clams, mahi-mahi, shrimp, barbecued ribs, prime rib, salads and vegetables. There are always at least six desserts, and everything is fresh and plentiful. Bring a big appetite to get your money's worth – you will have plenty of company here since the restaurant seats over 1,500 people! There is also a full menu with lobster and other meat dishes. Children under 10 eat for half price.

Starting out as a small grocer in Richmond in 1936 has led to a successful ham franchise and a deli that pleases the local folks in Williamsburg. Over 40 deli sandwiches can be eaten in or taken out – along with soups and desserts. The Smithfield and honey smoked hams, Virginia peanuts and other gourmet items can be shipped anywhere.

You can specify whether you want your meal mild, medium or hot at this restaurant since Indian cooking can come in all three styles. This Indian favorite has been popular with locals for years – their lunch buffet is a marvelous meal at a reasonable price. The naan bread and tandoori chicken are fresh and delicious, and the curries can come in any of the above-mentioned degrees of spiciness. Vegetarians love the food here, thanks to an extensive meatless menu.
